Our Archdiocese.

History of Archdiocese.

The Archdiocese of Santa Fe claims its foundation in the Franciscan missionaries from Europe who settled here as early as the late 16th century and lived among the native population.

Our Archdiocese is home to one of the oldest mission churches in the country (San Miguel) and several miraculous sites (St. Joseph’s staircase and the Santuario de Chimayo).

Christ has been loved here, and continues to be.

Why New Mexico?

New Mexico’s deserts provoke a spiritual resemblance to Jesus’ 40 days in the desert. The majestic highlands of the southern end of the Rocky Mountains are aptly named the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) mountains, recalling His sacrifice on Mt. Calvary. Both of these topographical features highlight the beautiful struggle to follow Christ that exists here.

The rugged landscape, beautiful vistas, and “salt-of-the-earth” people make our Archdiocese an authentic backdrop for living and preaching the Gospel to those who long for God.

Our history of missionary zeal created a foundation for today’s continuing mission: bringing Jesus Christ to those who do not know Him, and feeding the flock that has already chosen to follow Him.

With a rich Catholic heritage and teaming with religious orders in incredible settings, the Archdiocese of Santa Fe is a humble and beautiful place to call home.
